Diabetes Statistics - Ohio (pop. 11,353,140)

- 9% of Ohioans have diabetes
- In 2004 and 2005, 7.8% (6.6-9.0) and 6.7% (5.7-7.7) of Ohioans were diagnosed with diabetes
- Diabetes accounted for 10% of hospital discharges from three major Cleveland hospitals in 2000-2001.
- Diabetes is the 5th leading cause of death in Ohio.
- Ohio Department of Health estimates 1 million Ohioans have diabetes.
- Of these, ~8% are white, 10% are Hispanic, and 11% are black
- More than 187,000 Ohioans over age 40 are legally blind or visually impaired, primarily from diabetic retinopathy, cataract, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.
- This is expected to double in the next 30 years
- Blindness and vision impairment costs Ohio $160 million a year in benefits and lost taxable income.
