Diabetes Statistics - Cleveland
Updated February 2009

  • 1 in 11 northeast Ohioans has diabetes (conservative estimate).

  • Diabetes was the 8th leading cause of death in Cleveland in 2002 (3.2% of all deaths)
    • Leading causes of death include heart disease, types of cancer, diabetes and accidents for Cleveland
    • Heart disease to which diabetes is a major contributor was #1
    • Death certificates often do not list diabetes

  • In 2005, 7.6% (5.7-9.6) and in 2004, 9.1% (5.2-13.1) of Cuyahoga County residents surveyed were diagnosed with diabetes. (Note difference not statistically significant)

  • 7.6% of Lorain County residents were diagnosed with diabetes compared to 9.1% of Cuyahoga County residents in 2004. (Note difference not statistically significant)

  • Cuyahoga County pop. 1,393,978
    • ~27,000 have diabetic retinopathy
