- According to the World Health Organization, more than 3.2 million deaths each year are attributable to diabetes. By comparison, about 500,000 deaths world-wide are caused by breast cancer.
- It is projected that diabetes will kill 3.8 million people in 2007 - a number that is equal to those who would be killed by AIDS.
- Diabetes affected a staggering 246 million people worldwide in 2006. Diabetes, mostly Type II, affected 5.9% of the world�s adult population with almost 80% of the total in developing countries.
- Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, impotence and amputations.
- Every 30 seconds, someone has a diabetes-related amputation.
- Diabetes shortens life expectancy by five to seven years.
